Fort Ontario

History

Constructed by the British during the French and Indian War Fort Ontario served as a base, defending the area around the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. Destroyed during the war by the French then later rebuilt by the British. The 2nd Brigade of the U.S. 1st Infantry moved into Fort Ontario until WWII, where during WWII Fort Ontario served as a refugee shelter to approximately 1000 Jewish refugees.

Ghosts?

As legend is told, supposedly there has been paranormal activity inside the walls and around the perimiter of the fort. Gaining enough attention for Ghost Hunters from SyFy to explore the modern fort in 2012 and film an episode. A link to the episode can be found below, be sure to check it out!

Today

What the fort serves as today? Today the fort is in the hands of New York state and is operated as a museum. On occasion the fort will host reenactment events, Little League Baseball events, and open tours where you can visit the catacombs, barracks and everything else inside the fortress walls!
